EDSGN 558 - Bringing Rural Boadband to Georges' Valley
From Todd Spurgeon
In the time of quarantine with COVID19, access to the internet to connect with Family, Friends, Commerce, Entertainment and education is now more important than ever before in our lifetime. The systems engineering team from EDSGN 558 collaborated to explore the roadblocks providing commercially viable broadband internet to rural America, namely to Georges' Valley community. With the low population density and line-of-sight issues a conventional 4G LTE network is too cost prohibitive. Satellite Internet has too much latency and is subject to crippling data limits. The underutilized TV Whitespace solves these issues, requiring only a single, already existing tower to address these issues. With the cost per household works out to be $69.99. Therefore, a compelling argument is presented, outlining why the FCC and local municipality should permit this application of the TV Whitespace and there is a commercially viable method to serve this population the connectivity they deserve in this modern era.
