Shelly Black, Digital Archivist, North Carolina State University Libraries
The virtual reading room at NC State University Libraries is a secure environment where remote researchers can use digital materials with copyright, privacy, or donor-imposed restrictions. Learn how the Libraries worked with the NC State Virtual Computing Lab to configure a remote, virtual desktop that acts as the virtual reading room.
Green Goes with Anything: First Steps for Environmentally Sustainable Digital LibrariesAlex Kinnaman, Digital Preservation Coordinator, Virginia Tech University Libraries
Alan Munshower, Digital Collections Archivist, Virginia Tech University Libraries
As digital library practitioners, we are investigating ways to guide digital curation practices more broadly across Virginia Tech University Libraries (VTUL), while prioritizing considerations for environmental sustainability. In doing so, we explore university and professional standards and ethics, using the 2019 article “Towards Environmentally Sustainable Digital Preservation” (Pendergrast et al.) as a guide to focus on immediate areas that we can address in our digital library workflows. We investigate our workflows for appraisal, digitization, fixity checking, and storage choices to identify areas of improvement that find balance between best practices and environmental sustainability, and to examine the environmental impact of VTUL’s digital preservation choices on the community in which we live.
