Simone Miller interviewed Zihui Liang, an international student at Penn State University, about her background and experiences growing up in China, attending school there, and transitioning to studying in the United States. Liang discussed her childhood in rural Beijing, her family dynamics with her frequently traveling father, her schooling from primary through secondary education, and her exchange program to the U.S. As a high school freshman. She described the academic rigor and competitive environment at the international school she attended in Beijing, as well as her adjustment to the larger campus and social dynamics at Penn State. Liang shared her challenges finding a close-knit community at the university and her preference for smaller, more intimate settings. Overall, the interview provides insight into the experiences of an international student navigating the educational system and cultural differences between China and the United States.
